FISP Brought the SUN Program to South Florida

FISP brought the "Solutions Unlimited Now" SUN Program to South Florida in 2001 in order to help our teens who were having difficulty dealing with their problems.  Those problems sometimes result in troubles in school, with families relationships, and with friends.  So, FISP looked for a program  to offer our teens to help them that would give them the tools and support

to eliminate feelings of  anxiety, fear, being alone, lack of self-confidence, helplessness and hopelessness.  Instead, FISP  to

is now offering the SUN peer group program facilitated by a psychologist or counselor to help participants of all ages.

FISP stands for both the Florida Initiative for Solving Problems formed to further and continue to expand the SUN Program as a DBA of the Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention, Inc.a 501 (c) 3 not- for-profit organization.  It is FISP's mission to serve more teens and continue to broaden the scope of SUN to include additional age and  constituent groups.  Presently FISP is providing SUN groups to young adult woman at the Susan B. Anthony Center, pregnant teens at the Children's Harbor, and teens in the Juvenile Justice System.

SUN will soon  be offered to college students through the Adam Silverman Memorial College SUN program, seniors in the Senior SUNshine Club, and the SUN HOPE Program standing for "Help Overcome Problems Effectively" for people who have spinal cord injuries or other disabilities. FISP is striving to help make as many of our residents live better by giving them the tools to become more resilient by being better able to handle their problems.  FISP strives daily to reach out to  all we can by donations and grants so we can  help make each day more successful and happier for our SUN Program participants.  Our SUN  programs also brings people together to form relationships and develop companionships while sharing snacks and a graduating Pizza Party at which they get a certificate and the ability to live a happier and more successful life.

The original SUN Program was developed by professor Judith S. Tellerman, Ph.D. in Chicago.  After sponsoring research to

verify it's effectiveness FISP proceeded to offer SUN to many normative and at-risk teens in Broward County over the last eight

years.  Through continual research FISP has continued to improve and developed enhancements to the program. In keeping with the

this effort, FISP announces our collaborations with Nova Southeastern University School of  Psychology and it's Director of

Assessment and Consultation Center (SPACC) Dr. Ralph E. Cash. This partnership is for the purpose of  furthering our research

and evaluation of the FISP SUN Program enabling us to continue to enhance and improve SUN effectiveness.  The findings

to date suggest that the SUN model has the ability to produce remarkable results in terms of improved cognitive decision-making

and social skills in both troubled and normative teens and pre-teens.  The U.S. Armed Services has found SUN a useful program

for teen age children of soldiers stationed in Europe.

SUN is a very flexible program that can be adapted and utilized with any age group.  This adaptability has allowed FISP to

develop additional groups in partnership with many agencies.  This expansion has included our SUNSHINE Club for the elderly

in partnership in with the Health and Human Services Elderly and Veteran’s Department in Broward County.    FISP hopes to

restart groups at their facility this year.  The newly funded Adam Silverman Memorial College SUN groups are in development

as well.  A partnership will be developed with several area colleges to provide referrals to groups on their campuses.  FISP

expects to constantly expand and improve our SUN based programs with the help of Nova Southeastern University’s

continuous research which will provide data and constant improvement in all the FISP SUN based programs.

The feeling of belonging, acceptance and safety of having a confidential peer and adult support system can effectively help the 27.3

percent of Florida’s high school students in grades nine through eleven that experienced depression in 2005.  It can give the 14.5%

of   that 27.3 %, who seriously considered suicide and the 11.6% who made a suicide plan the confidence in themselves to stay alive.

The alarming statistic showing 108.5% of youth in the Hispanic community as being depressed and 17.6% having  made a plan to

accomplish suicide shows the urgent need in immigrant communities.

                                      Suicide is the:

5th leading cause of death for youths 12-14

3rd leading cause of death for  youths 15-24.

2nd leading cause of death for college students

Data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that suicide emerges as a significant problem

during the high school years, and ther is an additional increases among young adults 20–24 years of age, and  this continues

to increase marginally over the next two decades of life.

A new five-year analysis of the nation’s death rates recently released by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that

the suicide rate among 45-to-54-year-olds increased nearly 20 percent from 1999 to 2004, the latest year studied, far outpacing changes

in nearly every other age group. (All figures are adjusted for population.) For women 45 to 54, the rate leapt 31 percent. “That is certainly

a break from trends of the past.

Of the more than 32,000 people who committed suicide in 2004, 14,607 were 40 to 64 years old (6,906 of those were 45 to 54); 5,198

were over 65; 2,434 were under 21 years old

According to the latest data suicide rates among adults ages 35 to 54 continues to  rise significantly and mental health

professionals as well as prevention organizations are alarmed that this age group is not getting the proper care due to lack of

mental health being covered by medical insurance.  Other factors are the culture changing economy, the "sandwich generation" status,

meaning taking care of their children and parents at the same time.  The American societies need of  immediate satisfaction of desires

which has lead to huge debt as well as the change in the worlds economy has lead to many people getting into a state of hopelessness

          depression.

This is why FISP NEEDS to expand The SUN Program to all age groups in the future.

Help FISP continue this disparately needed program through

                                                                     donations and sponsorships.
